Red Wings waive Jonathan Ericsson; send down Givani Smith, Taro Hirose

Post by admin » Wed Feb 12, 2020 2:35 am

The Detroit Red Wings waived defenseman Jonathan Ericsson and reassigned forwards Givani Smith and Taro Hirose to the Grand Rapids Griffins on Tuesday.

If Ericsson clears at noon Wednesday, he can be assigned to Grand Rapids.

The 35-year-old Ericsson, in the final year of his contract, has appeared in only 11 games with the Red Wings (no points, minus-8), having missed 25 games with injuries. He cleared waivers earlier this season and appeared in 10 games with the Griffins (no goals, two assists, plus-4).

The Red Wings removed forwards Anthony Mantha and Frans Nielsen from injured reserve. Mantha will return to the lineup tonight after being out since Dec. 21 with a punctured lung.

Hirose played three games since being recalled (no points, minus-1). He has appeared in 26 games this season for Detroit (two goals, five assists, minus-12).

Smith has moved back and forth from Grand Rapids to Detroit multiple times this season. He has played in 21 games with the Red Wings (two goals, one assist, minus-2).

The Red Wings face the Buffalo Sabres tonight (7 p.m., Fox Sports Detroit) in the start of a four-game trip.
